Tax Law - U.S. and International

We provide comprehensive U.S. and international tax advice and tax planning to our clients. Our clients include U.S. and foreign individuals, small and medium-size businesses, international corporations and business owners and foreign employees living in the United States.

In addition to assisting our clients with determining the appropriate business and investment structures for tax purposes, we are also available to vigorously represent our clients when they have disputes with IRS. We work with individuals and companies to resolve their tax problems, including representation during an IRS audit, appeal of audit results, tax litigation and tax planning. We also represent clients who owe taxes, but who cannot pay them in full, including assistance with installment agreements, offers in compromise, liens and levies and garnishments. Upon hiring our law firm, we deal directly with IRS, and our clients rarely meet or speak directly with IRS.

G. Steven Brown heads our tax department.  With his experience as an IRS agent, CPA and tax analyst for a Fortune 500 company, and as a Florida Bar Board Certified Tax attorney, he guides our clients through the often difficult process of dealing with IRS audits, appeals and collection actions.

Our international department is headed by Robert R. Hendry, a Florida Bar Board Certified International attorney, with many years of experience assisting clients in the establishment of offshore business corporations, the establishment of international business operations in the U.S. and the acquisition of foreign companies.

Non-U.S. persons are generally subject to U.S. taxation as resident aliens or non-resident aliens. A resident alien is taxed in the U.S. much like a U.S. citizen, and is subject to U.S. taxation on his or her worldwide income. However, a non-resident alien is generally subject to U.S. taxation only on U.S. source income.

A misunderstanding of the tax rules can be very costly. Therefore, international investors and business executives who frequently travel to or visit the U.S. for business or personal purposes should consult with our tax attorneys in order to insure that they do not inadvertently become a resident alien, subject to U.S. taxation on their worldwide income. Similarly, tax planning is imperative for multiple country business operations.
